We are looking for volunteers to come with use to Zimbabwe Any time between the 30th May 2020 and 30th September 2020.
The aim of the trip will be for a two-sided cultural exchange programme between yourself and the school. The school has about 600 pupils from the age of 3 to 12 years and a class has average 50 pupils. The headmaster of the school will be your guide and will be on hand to help you all through the stay. Daily duties at the school will include helping the children to read and write English, taking the children outside for nature lessons, and getting involved in elevating the moral of the teachers and the children by sharing and exchanging life experience.
During your stay you will be based in a small village in Mutoko called Katsukunya at a very friendly family farm. The farm has shower facilities, flush toilets and electricity. The village surrounding the farm is financially deprived but rich in culture and togetherness. All accommodation is free however one will be expected to contribute towards food, on average a meal is 1 U.S.D.
You will fly into the Capital City Harare, on arrival into Harare a driver will pick you up, drop you at one of our supervisor’s house, here you will rest and see a bit of our Harare project and the children involved before proceeding to Mutoko which is a 3-hour car journey from the capital.
Once in Mutoko, the nearest convenient shop and clinic is about 1 km away and the biggest super market, hospital, police station, bank, and post office are in the town center which is about 7 km away. These are accessible by car or there is a 2 hourly time tabled bus or Tuk-Tuk.
The airlines you can choose are Emirates, Rwanda Air, Ethiopian, South African airways or British airways. Favorable airports are Manchester Gatwick, Glasgow, Birmingham, Gatwick and Heathrow. From Jersey you can fly Jersey- Birmingham - Harare with Emirates.
Zimbabwe has a sub-tropical climate that is influenced by altitude. There are four distinct seasons. A warm wet season from November to March, a transitional season from April to May, a cool dry winter season from May to August and a warm dry season from August to October. Average temperature ranges are from 7 to 21 degrees Celsius (45 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit) in June or July to 16 to 27 degrees Celsius (61 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit) in November.
You might may need injection(s) for the trip and we recommend you ask your local GP. Travel insurance is also recommended.
At the end of the trip, we hope to be able to arrange a safari for you in either Kariba, or one of the world heritage sites Mutusadona or Mana Pools.
Prior to the trip, one is more than welcome to fund raise for the school under the supervision of Jersey263.
